Dan Whitmore fitting timber siding to an off-grid cabin in the woods

Dan Whitmore

Off-grid power editor

Dan Whitmore has spent nine years living with battery power rather than reading about it. He wired and maintained a 4.2kWh off-grid system at a family cabin in northern Michigan, ran a two-person job site on portable units for three seasons, and has kept a travel trailer running on lithium since 2019. At Power Bencher he owns the parts of every guide that involve numbers: usable capacity against rated capacity, real inverter behaviour under motor start-up loads, recharge speed, and what a manufacturer's runtime chart leaves out. He is blunt about the limits of the work. Where a unit has not passed through his hands, the article says so and explains what the recommendation is based on instead.
