What to look for before you buy

What counts as the 3000W class

We used a deliberately narrow definition, because this is where most of the confusion in the category lives. A unit qualifies here if it delivers around 3000W or more as a continuous inverter rating, or stores around 3kWh or more, and can show that on a published specification rather than a marketing headline.

That rules out a lot of stock. A 1500W inverter with a 3000W peak is not in this class, whatever the listing title says. Three of our four picks clear the bar as single units: 3600W over 3600Wh, 3000W over 3024Wh, and 6000W over 3840Wh. The fourth, the Generac GB2000, only qualifies as a pair, and we say so in its review rather than quietly counting a peak figure.

Continuous, peak and boost are three different numbers

Every specification sheet in this tier carries at least two wattage figures, and they mean different things.

Continuous is what the inverter can hold indefinitely. This is the number that decides what you can plug in and leave running.

Peak or surge covers a fraction of a second while a motor starts. It is real, but it is not capacity you can use. A 3000W peak on a 1500W inverter tells you the unit survives a compressor kicking in, not that it can run a 3000W load.

Boost modes, such as EcoFlow’s X-Boost, reach their headline wattage by lowering output voltage so current stays inside the inverter’s limit.
