Lighting is the gentlest job you can give a power station, which is why the question is never whether a unit can do it. It is how many evenings you get before you have to think about the unit again.

The runtime arithmetic

Assume roughly 85% of rated capacity reaches an AC load once inverter losses are counted. That turns 512Wh into about 435Wh at the outlet.

Against that, at loads you can read off the box of your own lights:

Why 6,000 cycles is the quiet headline

Run a full charge and discharge every single night of a sixty-night season and 6,000 cycles takes a hundred seasons to consume. In practice you would use closer to thirty cycles a season, because each charge covers two evenings.

The battery is therefore not the part that decides how long this unit stays in service. Calendar aging, connectors and how carelessly it gets stored will end it first. That is a genuinely different position from packs rated at 3,000 cycles, where heavy daily use in an RV or a van does eventually matter.

Where two outlets bites

The specification lists two AC sine wave outlets. A display of two string runs plugs straight in and stays tidy. A display of four does not.

The fix is an outdoor-rated power strip, which works, but it puts another connection and another set of contacts in the open air. The specification caps panel input at 220W. Manufacturers quote solar recharge times from that ceiling, which is only reached in bright, direct, well-angled sun. Assume instead that a panel array delivers roughly 60% of its rating across five usable hours in decent conditions.

On that basis:

  • Input at roughly 130W average replaces that in about an hour and a half of sun

Most small power stations give you one or two AC sockets and expect you to solve the rest with an extension lead. This one gives you three, and for lighting that changes how the setup looks on the ground.

Outlets are a lighting specification

A backyard display is rarely one plug. It is a run over the pergola, a run along the fence and something on the table. Two outlets means a strip. Three means no strip.

What 600W buys over 300W

LED strings are a trivial load. The moment a display includes something with a motor, an inflatable’s blower, a small fountain pump, a fog machine, the continuous rating starts to matter, because motors draw a brief surge at start-up well above their running figure.

At 600W continuous this unit has roughly twice the headroom of the 300W Anker C300 in the same size and weight class. That is the reason to pick it. It is not a capacity argument, since both hold 288Wh.

Read the 1500W figure correctly

Power Lifting reaches 1500W by lowering the output voltage so current stays inside limits. That works for a resistive load, where less voltage simply means less heat. A motor needs full voltage to develop torque, so the number does not apply to the blower or the pump.

For anything with a motor, the figure that counts is 600W. Treat 1500W as irrelevant to this use case and you will size correctly.

What to look for before you buy

Start with watts, not watt-hours

Every light set sold in the US has its wattage printed on the box or moulded into the plug. That number, not the size of the battery, is where sizing starts.

Modern LED string lights are extremely light loads. A long run is typically a handful of watts. Add several runs, a few accent fixtures and a controller and a whole backyard display commonly lands somewhere between 25W and 60W. That is less than a single laptop charger.

The consequence is worth stating plainly: for LED lighting, the inverter rating almost never decides anything. Even the smallest inverter here, at 300W continuous, has five to twelve times the headroom a 25W to 60W display needs. What you are actually buying is hours, sockets and a way to refill.

Turning watt-hours into evening hours

Assume roughly 85% of rated capacity reaches an AC load once inverter conversion losses are counted. Then divide by your load. Across this shortlist:

Now convert that into the unit that matters, which is evenings. A five-hour evening at 40W spends 200Wh. So one charge covers roughly one evening on either 288Wh unit, two on the Explorer 500 v2 and three on the RIVER 2 Pro.

That is the whole sizing decision. Everything else is convenience.

Capacity costs less to carry than you think

Count your plugs before you count your watts

This is the specification that trips up lighting buyers, because nobody thinks of it as a specification.

The Explorer 500 v2 lists two AC sine wave outlets. The C300 lists three, inside eight ports in total. The RIVER 2 Pro lists eleven ports overall. A display made of a pergola run, a fence run and a table lamp needs three plugs, and on a two-socket unit that means an outdoor power strip.

A strip works. It also adds contacts sitting in dew, and one more thing to trip over in a dark garden. Count the plugs your display actually needs, then pick a unit that takes them directly if you can.

Recharging: socket, or sun

There are two ways to get through a season, and they suit different gardens.

If the unit comes indoors, recharge speed is what you care about. The Elite 30 V2 reaches 80% in 45 minutes and full in 70 on 380W AC input. The C300 reaches 80% in 50 minutes. The Explorer 500 v2 needs 52 minutes to 80%, which on a larger pack means about 410Wh returned. The RIVER 2 Pro takes 70 minutes to full. All four comfortably refill between one evening and the next.

If the unit stays outside, only the RIVER 2 Pro publishes a solar input ceiling: 220W. At that figure a full recharge from empty is 3.5 hours of perfect input, which in real conditions is most of a clear day. Replacing one 200Wh evening, however, takes only an hour or two of decent sun. That is the realistic promise of solar for lighting: it covers the nightly spend easily and refills a flat pack slowly.

Cycle life is not your limiting factor

Rated cycles run from 3,000 on the C300 and the RIVER 2 Pro to 6,000 on the Explorer 500 v2. It is tempting to treat that as a lifespan comparison. For lighting it is not.

Run a sixty-night season and, at one charge every second evening, you use about thirty cycles a year. Even 3,000 cycles is a century of seasons at that rate. The things that will actually end these units are calendar aging, connector wear and a winter spent in a damp shed.

The cycle figure only becomes a real comparison if the same unit spends the rest of the year working in a van, an RV or a workshop.

Weather: the part most guides skip

None of these four publish an ingress-protection rating. Not one.

That is not a criticism of any single unit, it is the state of the category. It does mean you should never plan on the pack being rained on, dewed on or left in a puddle at the base of a fence post. Put it in a covered box, a sealed storage bin with the lid propped for airflow, or under a table, and run the cable out.

Cold is the other half of it. Every lithium pack delivers less in low temperatures, and LiFePO4 cells refuse to accept a charge below freezing to protect themselves. A unit left in an unheated garage through winter will read lower than its rating and may need to warm up indoors before it charges at all.
