What to look for before you buy

What counts as the 500Wh class

There is no standards body here, so brands round in whichever direction flatters them. In practice the bracket a 500Wh shopper cross-shops runs from about 290Wh to about 770Wh, and this shortlist spans that whole range: 292Wh, 512Wh and two units at 768Wh.

Only one of them, the Jackery Explorer 500 v2 at 512Wh, is literally a 500Wh unit. The others sit either side of it, and they are here because they win jobs the 512Wh unit cannot. Anything below 290Wh stops being useful for an overnight load. Anything above 800Wh is being sold as a 1000Wh unit and should be judged against that class instead.

The order is unlikely to change, but treat the gaps as approximate rather than exact.

The Anker SOLIX C800X publishes neither a cycle rating nor a battery chemistry, so it cannot be placed on that list at all. That is not a small omission when longevity is what you are comparing.

Buy a 1000Wh class unit instead if you want a refrigerator covered through a power cut, if any load exceeds about 800W for more than a few minutes, or if you need more than roughly six hours at 100W.

Buy smaller if the entire load list is phones and a headlamp, where a power bank weighs a fraction as much.

The 500Wh bracket is right when one person or one small group needs a night of electronics, carried by hand, and refilled from a wall socket or a modest panel. Judged against that job it is the most useful size on the market. Judged against a fridge, it is a disappointment waiting to happen.

On the 300W and 500W units in this guide a kettle, a coffee maker, a microwave and a fridge are all out of scope, and that is a limit of the inverter rather than the battery.

How many phone charges is 500Wh?

A modern phone battery holds roughly 15Wh to 20Wh. Allow about 15% for conversion loss on a 512Wh unit and you have around 435Wh at the socket, which is roughly 22 to 29 full charges. Charging a phone is one of the few jobs where this size genuinely lasts a long weekend for a whole group.

Can a 500Wh power station run a refrigerator?
